Pacific Coast Highway
One of the most recognizable roadways in America, the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, runs from San Diego all the way up to San Francisco and has some of the most scenic views in the state of California. Formally known as Highway 1, the PCH began construction in 1919, thanks to the labor of inmates at the infamous and local San Quentin Prison. If you travel the entirety of the PCH, you'll have traveled over 650 miles, and crossed 33 different bridges along the way, all with incredible views of nature like you've never seen before.
Traveling along the PCH in your Porsche, you'll see the best of California's vineyards, valleys, mountains, redwoods, and rivers, making for an unforgettable weekend experience. If you want to see California's beauty in a way you've never seen before, take a drive on the Pacific Coast Highway in your Porsche.
Highway 101
Oregon's continuation of the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 101 spans the entirety of Oregon's coast and is home to some of the most beautiful ocean views in America. Established in 1926, Highway 101 picks up at the California border, carrying on the PCH spirit for over 300-miles along the gorgeous Oregonian coast. The 101 is far more mountainous than its Californian counterpart, the PCH, as it runs between the Pacific Ocean and the Oregon Coast Range. In 2015, the Oregon state legislature passed and designated Highway 101 as the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq Veterans Memorial Highway, although the Highway 101 name remains popular among locals.
Olympic Peninsula Loop
Located in Washington state, the Olympic Peninsula Loop is a continuation of Oregon's Highway 101, meaning it is also a continuation of the Pacific Coast Highway down in California as well. Back for the 2022 model year with more colors and customization options than ever before, the Porsche Taycan will arrive soon here at Porsche Lehigh Valley. Porsche's latest edition of the Taycan will receive significant upgrades both inside and out, with the addition of new technology and driver assistance features, including for the first time on a Taycan, Remote Park Assist. The fully-electric Porsche is slated to arrive by the end of this year, so stop by Porsche Lehigh Valley to join the waiting list today!
Better Battery Technology
Being a fully-electric vehicle, the Porsche Taycan is built from the ground up with technology as the foundation of the vehicle. The 2022 Porsche Taycan will see improvements to its thermal management and charging functions, which in turn has increased the performance and reliability of the Taycans drivetrain.
Improvements to the Taycan's Turbo Charging Planner will allow the high-voltage battery to withstand more heat, which allows for earlier access to fast-charging the battery. Being able to fast-charge your Taycan earlier means you'll spend less time at charging stations, and more time enjoying the road.
Remote Control Parking
New owners of the 2022 Porsche Taycan will be able to opt for the new Remote Park Assist feature. Remote Park Assist will allow owners to use a smartphone app to park and maneuver their Taycan without ever being behind the wheel. Parallel and perpendicular parking is made easy with Remote Park Assist, as it has an automatic control option that will help you navigate parking spots whether or not you're behind the wheel.
Using ultrasonic sensors and cameras, the Remote Park Assist system automatically detects and measures viable parking spaces. When the Remote Park Assist system detects enough space to park all you have to do is start the parking process with your Porsche Connect app, and then exit the vehicle, the Taycan will handle the rest.
While using the Remote Park Assist feature, all you need to do is continuously monitor the parking process via the Porsche Connect app. While monitoring the parking process, owners must hold a button in the Porsche Connect app which allows the Remote Park Assist system to take control of the Taycan's steering as well as forward and reverse movements. Remote Park Assist will park your Taycan for you as long as that button is held, and will immediately stop the parking process if the button is released for any reason.
Navigate the city and find parking with ease, with the new Remote Park Assist system, available on the 2022 Porsche Taycan. Arriving soon, you can place an order for your 2022 Porsche Taycan here at Porsche Lehigh Valley located in Allentown, PA.
Upgraded Infotainment
Fitted with the sixth generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the Porsche Taycan makes staying connected and informed easier than ever before. When it was released in 2019, the Porsche Taycan seamlessly integrated Apple CarPlay, allowing owners to easily access their Apple Music and Apple Podcasts with the touch of a button. Taking connectivity a step further for 2022, Porsche has now added Android Auto, allowing Taycan owners to seamlessly interact with their Android smartphone via the PCM system.
Whether you own an iPhone or an Android, you will be able to use your smartphone functions and apps via PCM 6.0 or built-in Google Assistant voice commands. Simply plug your smartphone into the PCM via the USB-C port, and you'll automatically be connected to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay in your Porsche Taycan. Handle important phone calls, play music, and navigate with ease by utilizing Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in your 2022 Porsche Taycan.
Porsche also upgraded its Voice Pilot voice assistant so it will understand commands easier, as well as provide directions and adjustments in real-time. Alongside this comes updates to the infotainment display and graphics, as well as an upgraded layout and operating system. Are you shopping for a new-to-you vehicle but looking to avoid the uncertainty that comes with your average used vehicle? With a manufacturer-backed warranty, updated features, and low mileage, certified pre-owned vehicles are sweeping the market offering exceptional value per dollar. If value and peace of mind are at the top of your list when looking for a pre-owned vehicle, a manufacturer-certified pre-owned vehicle is the right choice for you.
What is Certified Pre-Owned?
While your typical used vehicle comes as-is with no warranty, a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle comes backed by the manufacturer with great warranties and in some cases a buy-back guarantee. Certified pre-owned vehicles are always newer model vehicles with a low amount of miles on them, that are inspected by the dealer and approved by the manufacturer, making them a great choice if you're looking for a new car without the new car price.
The Pros
More Money in Your Wallet
The more money you save, the better, right? With just a little bit of mileage, new cars see a lot of depreciation and that's why certified pre-owned vehicles are such a great deal. Certified pre-owned vehicles are often 2-3 years old, with the original owners already taking the hit on the depreciation and passing the savings along to you. Get all the benefits of a new vehicle without the wallet-draining high price and purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle at Porsche Lehigh Valley today!
Less Risky
While any pre-owned vehicle comes with risk, CPO vehicles lower that risk with their multi-point inspections and manufacturer-provided warranties. Warranty lengths and coverages vary from brand to brand, with some simply extending the initial warranty and others being an entirely new warranty that covers the CPO vehicle. Put your mind at ease and purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle that is confidently backed by the manufacturer.
Newer Vehicle, Lower Mileage
In order to get certified, each potential CPO vehicle can only have a limited number of miles on them at the time of certification. While the specific number varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, most CPO vehicles are 6 years old or newer with fewer than 70,000 miles on them in order to qualify as a certified pre-owned vehicle. With low mileage, new features, and less risk, it's easy to see why purchasing a certified pre-owned vehicle at Porsche Lehigh Valley is a great choice.
Buyer Protection
As if an extended warranty wasn't enough to inspire confidence in a CPO vehicle, many manufacturers guarantee their CPO vehicles with a buyer protection program. Say your vehicle was found to be involved in a flood, most manufacturers would allow you to swap that vehicle for a new one or return it altogether. With manufacturers having such confidence in their vehicles, buying a CPO vehicle doesn't seem all that risky! If you're looking for a used vehicle and want to buy in confidence, shop certified pre-owned at Porsche Lehigh Valley located in Allentown, PA.
The Cons
As good as a CPO vehicle may sound, with its manufacturer-provided warranties, low mileage, and newer features, they aren't perfect or completely risk-free. If you're considering a CPO vehicle it is important to consider both the pros and cons of the purchase, here are some of the drawbacks of CPO.
Not All Are Created Equal
While almost every manufacturer has a CPO program, what is included and what is required for those programs varies wildly depending on the manufacturer. Although this may make the decision-making process a little more difficult, it shouldn't deter you from purchasing a CPO vehicle, just make sure to do your research and read the fine print. While used vehicles can never be identical, the standardization of the certified pre-owned process is a great way to level the playing field.
A Slightly Higher Cost
Extended warranties and multi-point inspections, while great, unfortunately, aren't cheap and make CPO vehicles slightly more expensive than their non-certified counterparts. However, if peace of mind in a used vehicle is what you're looking for, incurring the slightly higher cost of a CPO vehicle is an easy choice. The extra cost of a CPO isn't wasted however, it's returned to the customer in the form of the CPO warranty, multi-point inspections, and roadside assistance programs, making the CPO vehicle a great choice.
A Little Less Variety
If being unique and an individualist is important to you, a CPO vehicle may not be the right choice for you as they often have little to no variety between them. With CPO vehicles having to be more recent model years, the variety of vehicles may be a bit less, but the quality of the vehicles is a lot stronger. Remaining flexible when searching for a CPO vehicle is a great way to ensure you will find a great vehicle at a great price backed by great manufacturer warranties.

Stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire, you open your trunk and begin to look for the spare but wait a minute…it's not there! Unfortunately this is a common reality in the 2020's for all new vehicles as many new vehicles don't come with a spare tire in the trunk anymore. You may be remembering times of the past in which a vehicle had a spare tire mounted in the trunk or underneath the vehicle and a small little jack to go with it. However those days, just like a vehicle's spare tire, are gone. Nowadays modern vehicles tend to come with no spare and just a small can of flat tire repair gel, not exactly the most reliable or desirable way to handle an unexpected flat tire. Nobody wants to spend time on the side of the road, in the heat, rain, or snow waiting on a tow truck to come and take them to a local shop all because of a flat tire, and that's why it's imperative to carry a spare tire in your vehicle. Carrying a spare tire in your vehicle not only allows you to get back on the road quicker, but it provides peace of mind, allowing you to be confident that not even a flat tire can stop you on the road. Stop in at Porsche Lehigh Valley located in Allentown, PA to speak with our Parts Department about all of your spare tire needs.
The Full-Size Spare
A full-size spare shares the same dimensions as the vehicle's standard tire, the benefit being that it isn't just a temporary fix until you arrive at your local mechanic to have a new tire mounted and balanced. A full-size spare also allows you to travel at regular speeds, which is something a smaller spare tire or "doughnut" would prohibit you from doing. A full-size spare is also one of the most effective and efficient options for a spare tire there is, making for minimal down time of your vehicle so life can carry on as usual without interruption. One of the few drawbacks is that the full-size spare takes up more space than a temporary spare or can of flat tire fixing gel. If a full-size spare is the option for you, contact our Parts Department at Porsche Lehigh Valley, today.
The Temporary Full-Size Spare
While a true full-size spare is the most effective option, the drawback of it taking up so much space in the vehicle is something to be considered. With that being said, a good option if you're unable to house a full-size spare would be the temporary full-size spare. A temporary full-size spare tire is just like your regular, full-size tire, however it has a smaller tread depth and less weight to it in order to save on space while remaining effective. A temporary full-size spare will allow you to safely drive to your mechanic's shop or destination so you can get a proper tire mounted and balanced on the car. The temporary full-size spare is a great option for those that carry a lot of cargo, or even those driving compact cars which don't have a lot of room for a full-size spare.
The Compact Temporary Spare
A compact temporary spare may not be the most effective option in terms of being able to drive on it for miles or at regular speeds, but that doesn't mean it's completely ineffective or useless. A compact temporary spare will allow you to travel a short distance at lower speeds in order to help you arrive safely at a mechanic's shop or your destination. The compact temporary spare is a bit smaller and narrower than a full-size spare but it's still just as useful in the event of an unexpected flat tire on the side of the road. These compact temporary spares or "doughnuts" tend to be the traditional spare tire most think of when they think of flat tire repair.
The Folding Temporary Spare
A folding temporary spare is a small spare tire, similar to the "doughnut" spare but it is even more compact by being deflated and being able to be folded for easy and efficient storage. While you may not be able to travel at regular speeds with this tire, you will be able to safely arrive at a mechanics shop to receive a new tire and get on your way. These spares do require inflation before usage, which is an important thing to keep in mind when selecting the right spare tire to keep on hand.
Run-Flat Tires
The most cutting-edge technology when it comes to spare tires is the Run-Flat spare tire which allows you to keep driving at regular speeds for up to 50 miles from the initial puncture. This incredible technology allows a driver to safely and effectively drive in almost any type of condition to reach their mechanic's shop in the event of an unexpected flat tire. Run-Flats are one of the most expensive spare tire options, but also one of the most effective outside of carrying a full-size spare.
Now Let's Get Rolling
While flat tires are almost always unexpected and incredibly inconvenient, they are an inevitable part of owning a vehicle. Making sure you select the right kind of spare tire that fits all of your needs is a great way to help minimize the interference and inconvenience of an unexpected flat tire. Utilizing a spare tire properly can save you time, money and aggravation, but using one improperly could exacerbate the situation. When using a spare tire, keep in mind that the function of most spare tires is to help you arrive safely at a place of repair while maintaining mobility and freedom. A tour bus stands outside the door. Thompson simply decided to buy it, just like he decided during the pandemic to become a musician. Tonight is the first time he is performing before an audience, which in this case means his father-in-law, a close friend and the acclaimed photographer of the musical world, Danny Clinch. The letter board at the entrance reads: "ONE NIGHT ONLY –ZERO FANS TOUR".
Crazy? Of course. But aren't successful people ultimately the ones who are crazy enough to believe in an idea right from the start – and also crazy enough to put it into practice? The lyrics of "Land of the Free" continue like this: "Yeah, we're dreamers who believe we can turn nothing into something."
That's what the people of New Orleans are like. This is already clear on the afternoon of the concert as we drive through the city in Thompson's ivory-coloured 1963 Porsche 356 B, down narrow streets with live music on nearly every corner and past voodoo shops and funky restaurants serving fresh seafood. When we stop, people immediately want to talk, which admittedly might have something to do with the car. But then strangers start acting like friends. The city cultivates a quirky small-town atmosphere despite a population of nearly 400,000. Tourists can't help but begin to imagine that they know every corner and every inhabitant – yes, that they feel at home – after just half an hour.
Thompson himself contributes to this feeling. When he meets new people he more often than not finds himself treating them like old friends. This suggests that the seemingly crazy streak that keeps showing up in his life is more of a mixture of curiosity and courage: two qualities that people often lose when they grow up.
"Do you know how I became a producer?" Thompson asks after parking briefly on Bourbon Street and negotiating a Netflix deal on the phone while chatting intermittently with passers-by. Well aware of the delightful nature of the story, his brown eyes light up and he can't help but smile. After dropping out of college he was bored stiff at a trucking company he had started with his father Tim. He heard that actress Brittany Murphy, who has since passed away, was going to celebrate the end of a film project with a party in New Orleans, and "I wanted to be there!".
Thompson secretly borrowed an impressive sports car from his father's garage, drove to the party, and acted as if he belonged. He was allowed in, and events rapidly took their course. He got to know people from the film industry who invited him to Los Angeles. "I had printed phony business cards and pretended to be the head of a catering company, thinking that was a good way into the sector," he says with a smile. But then things took a different turn.
On the back seat of a taxi he found a screenplay – no joke. "I had never read one before," he admits. From that moment on he was captivated by this fascinating but also at times ruthless industry. He wanted to make the movie Burning Palms from the screenplay, and asked his father for support.
Here it should be noted that Thompson's father is a salt-of-the-earth type who has always enjoyed sparring in a genial manner with his son. About things like who in fact is the owner of this rare Porsche Carrera GT, of which only 1,270 were made. The car belongs to Tim Thompson, who made his fortune in the oil industry and proceeded to start numerous companies, all of which feature roll-up-your-sleeves types of work. Coming from this background, he looked somewhat askance at his son's dreams of life as an artist. But he also knew that Tyler was not at all crazy, but instead courageous and curious. Those two qualities made sense to him, so he invested in Tyler's dream.
The first project was a sublime flop, but it only served to stoke the junior Thompson's ambition. A giant lesson learned was the basis of creating Cross Creek Pictures, Tyler had inherited his father's habit of not letting failure stand in his way. He was fascinated by the screenplay of "Black Swan", which other producers had rejected. So he produced this ballet-based horror film for 13 million dollars. And Tyler's hunch paid off: Black Swan brought in around 330 million dollars worldwide and Natalie Portman won an Oscar for best actress.
Thompson also shares his father's love for Porsche. "I've driven all kinds of cars and was attracted by some of them but it's the coolness that keeps bringing me back to Porsche," he comments about the brand.
"Be curious, not judgmental" is a famous maxim from the great poet Walt Whitman. Thompson tries to embrace this advice and impart it to others. "Once I was giving a talk to film students when a camera crew was shooting outside. I told them they should go out right away and talk with the script writers, the director, the crew, that they'd learn much more out there than in here!"
He then tells the story of how he got the idea of producing the movie Everest from listening to what guests in a hotel lobby were talking about. He overheard people discussing an expedition to the highest mountain in the world, joined the conversation – and presented the adventure film two years later at the Venice International Film Festival.
That sounds so simple, but let's be honest: who really seeks inspiration by striking up a conversation with two strangers in a hotel lobby? Thompson is precisely that kind of person, and that's why he can tell stories like the time he asked Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis to teach him how to surf, and Thompson nearly drowned. Or how he – successfully – made it into the qualifying round of Indian Wells in 2018. All of Thompson's anecdotes have a tongue-in-cheek or self-deprecating tenor. Other people are always the heroes. And that's why he can make the following comment about his career as a producer whose films have earned over a billion dollars in ten years: "There was an awful lot of luck involved." On the other hand, just about everyone who has known him for a while, such as his father-in-law, best friend, and band members, would add in his case that fortune favours the bold.
Some people react fearfully to crises, whereas others come into their own. Thompson managed to produce his films by viewing each one of them as a personal challenge. In Land of the Free he sings about dreamers who believe they can turn nothing into something. He succeeds because he has the courage to make the attempt and because he doesn't hesitate to ask other people for help. Also because he's a quick learner, as is evident from our talk. He is constantly asking questions while at the same time listening carefully and seeking to analyse. Several times throughout the afternoon he calls his wife to find out how her day has been going – as if the two of them had not spent the entire morning together playing with their daughter and three sons.
"I saw the pandemic as an opportunity to fulfil my dream of becoming a musician," says Thompson, who admits that he jumped straight into steps two through five of the process. He bought a tour bus, booked a recording studio, planned concerts, and hired Steve Jordan – who is one of the industry's most coveted drummers and has produced music for Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and John Mayer, to name just a few – to produce his record. "Only then did I realise it's important to take singing lessons – because your voice sounds different on stage than it does in the shower." So he went back to the all-important first step and polished his vocal skills and songs. Then it became time to perform the works at this concert with no fans.
Thompson stands on the stage at Tipitina's. At first he's visibly nervous, even though only a few people are there. But in the middle of the first song he remembers a third childlike quality that adults often lose – which is simply to have fun! And suddenly the three-person band starts playing as if the bar were full to bursting.

The Taycan has set the first electric production car benchmark at the 7.7-kilometre GT Circuit layout at The Bend, the second-longest permanent racing circuit in the world behind the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Porsche Track Experience Chief Driving Instructor and former Bathurst 1000 winner Luke Youlden was the driver behind the wheel for the lap time, setting a benchmark of 3:30.344 (Taycan Turbo S: CO2 emissions combined 0 g/km, electricity consumption combined 28.5 kWh/100 km).
"The lap time of the Taycan just absolutely blew me away," said Youlden. "You drive it in a similar way to any other Porsche sports car. The turn-in, handling and acceleration were outstanding. The power out of the corners is definitely where it makes up a lot of time." For comparison, Youlden also set a time of 3:22.066 in the new 911 Turbo around the 35-corner circuit on the same day, a time that set a new production car lap record for the GT Circuit.
An electrifying new lap record
The Bend Motorsport Park, Australia's newest racing circuit, does not sit naturally in its landscape. That's not a criticism: the circuit itself superbly follows the natural contours of the land on the limestone plains, rising and falling gently across the rolling hills. But the size and modernity of the facility stands out in contrast to the arid surroundings of the plains of the Coorong district.
The same could be said for the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Porsche was never going to do things by halves when it came to introducing its first full EV. But the standard to which it immediately jumped was so impressive that in many ways it presents just like The Bend; a vast leap into the future. It seemed sensible, then, to join the pair in a bid to demonstrate just how good a four-door, battery-powered sports car can be around such a challenging circuit. And so it came to be; a Taycan Turbo S ready to attack what is the second-longest permanent racing circuit anywhere in the world, The Bend's 7.77km GT layout, with the sole objective of seeing how fast it could go against the stopwatch.
The challenge? Set a new EV lap record on what is arguably the mini-Nürburgring of the south – albeit with more run-off and fewer trees. Performance Porsches already have a history on The Bend's long track. In 2018, MOTOR Magazine brought a standard 911 GT2 RS and a decidedly non-standard racing driver in the form of Supercars and GT ace Warren Luff to set the first-ever outright record for a production car at the venue. Their result was a lap completed in a shade over 3:24.00.
Now comparing a Taycan to a 911 GT2 RS, the most extreme road-going Porsche available in recent times, might be like comparing apples to a coffee mug, but actually the raw performance specifications aren't that different. So, while it's not a direct comparison, there would be plenty of interest in what kind of time the Taycan would produce, relative to its only real known competition. To help the process, Porsche's Chief Driving Instructor Luke Youlden was placed behind the wheel; there's no one better to demonstrate the surprising performance of the Taycan Turbo S.
"To drive, the Taycan is not too dissimilar to a petrol-driven car: it's unbelievably dynamic," said Youlden. "Even though it [the Taycan] is a little bit heavier, the batteries are very, very low so the centre of gravity is extremely low, which obviously makes the handling and the braking exceptionally good." The former Bathurst champion's assessment of the car's strengths would become apparent the moment he launched towards the first turn.
Conditions were perfect for such an exercise
Blue skies and temperatures in the mid-20s degrees were close to perfect for producing ultra-quick lap times at a circuit where the weather conditions can play a substantial role in changing the ultimate lap time. For a car as substantial in size and weight as the Taycan, at least relative to the lighter and nimbler 911, the way the car devoured the 35 corners The Bend has to offer was nothing short of remarkable. Immense torque on instant demand made it particularly strong when firing out of the many tight and twisty sections on the back part of the circuit.
It's a credit to the chassis, suspension and electronics that the Taycan Turbo S has the grip to make use of all that torque. The centre of gravity sitting low in the car saw The Bend's fast sweepers and rapid direction changes handled with aplomb, while the 260km/h top speed was more than enough to deal with situations where the steering wheel was straight. The outcome? Impressive. Staggering, even. A lap time of just over 3:30.00 – or just eight seconds slower than the new 911 Turbo achieved on the same day.
"To be that close to the old GT2 RS lap record around here? Unbelievable. It's extremely fast. We did repeated 2.5 seconds 0-100 km/h runs in this car and that sort of feel off the corner was also where the Taycan makes up most of its lap time. It's unbelievable," Youlden beamed afterwards. More impressive was the fact that the lap record came in the same week as an intense series of driving duties for the Taycan, as it was placed in the hands of some of Australia's top automotive media for an on-track demonstration of its prowess. Despite repeated high-performance launches to demonstrate the remarkable launching ability of the car, as well as hot laps driven only the way journalists can when they're looking to analyse every aspect of a car's behaviour, the Taycan rose to the challenge. And then went and set a lap record that others will almost certainly find exceedingly difficult to beat.

The all-electric Macan is ready for the road: after initial testing on the proving grounds of the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, the well-camouflaged next-generation prototypes of the compact SUV are now heading outside Porsche premises for the first time.
"Testing in a real-life environment is now getting underway – one of the most important milestones in the development process," says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development, at Porsche AG. By the time the all-electric Macan is launched onto the market in 2023, it will have covered some three million test kilometres worldwide in varying conditions. The prototypes are able to incorporate the experience gained from countless previous test kilometres – driven in a virtual space.
Digital development and testing not only saves time and costs, it also preserves resources, so it enhances sustainability. Instead of real vehicles, the engineers use digital prototypes – computational models that replicate the properties, systems and power units of a vehicle to a high degree of accuracy. There are 20 digital prototypes for the purpose of simulation in a number of development categories, such as aerodynamics, energy management, operation and acoustics. "We regularly collate the data from the various departments and use it to build up a complete, virtual vehicle that is as detailed as possible," explains Dr Andreas Huber, manager for digital prototypes at Porsche. This allows previously undiscovered design conflicts to be swiftly identified and resolved.
The aerodynamics specialists are among the first engineers to work with a digital prototype. "We started with a flow-around model when the project first started about four years ago," reports Dr Thomas Wiegand, Director of aerodynamics development. Low aerodynamic drag is fundamental to the all-electric Macan with a view to ensuring a long range. Even minor flow enhancements can make a huge difference. The engineers are currently using simulations to fine-tune details such as the cooling air ducts. The calculations not only take into account different arrangements of the components, they also reflect real-life temperature differences.
Virtual testing with the new display and operating system
New methods now allow very precise simulation of both aerodynamics and thermodynamics. "The digital world is indispensable to the development of the all-electric Macan," says aerodynamics expert Wiegand. The electric drive system – from the battery through to the motor – requires a completely separate cooling and temperature control concept, one that is very different from that of a conventionally powered vehicle. While a temperature window of 90 to 120 degrees is the target for combustion engines, the electric motor, powertrain electronics and high-voltage battery require a range of between 20 and 70 degrees, depending on the component. The critical scenarios don't occur on the road but during fast high power charging at high outside temperatures. However, the Porsche developers are able to precisely calculate and digitally optimise position, flow and temperature.
Virtual prototypes can be combined with real-world scenarios at an early stage. The best example here is the development of a completely new display and operating concept for the next generation of Macan. Using what is known as a seat box to recreate the driver's environment, the display and operating concept can be brought to life in an early development phase in conjunction with the digital prototype. "Simulation allows us to assess displays, operating procedures and the changing influences during a journey from the driver's point of view," explains Fabian Klausmann of the Driver Experience development department. Here, the 'test drivers' are not just the specialists themselves but also non-experts. This allows all interaction between driver and vehicle to be studied down to the last detail, enabling selective optimisation even before the first physical cockpit has been built.
Development goal: to be the sportiest model in the segment
The first physical prototypes of the all-electric Macan were built based on the data obtained from the simulations – in some cases elaborately by hand or using special tools. These are then regularly adapted based on the virtual refinement process.
By the same token, the findings from road testing are fed directly into digital development. "Endurance testing on closed-off testing facilities and public roads in real-life conditions is still indispensable to ensure that the vehicle structure, operational stability and reliability of hardware, software and all functions meet our high quality standards," says Member of the Executive Board Michael Steiner.
The demanding test programme for the all-electric Macan, carried out under the extremes of climatic and topographical conditions, includes disciplines such as the charging and conditioning of the high-voltage battery, which has to meet very rigorous standards. "Like the Taycan, the all-electric Macan, with its 800-volt architecture, will offer typical Porsche E-Performance," promises Steiner, citing development goals such as long-distance range, high-performance fast charging and reproducible best-in-class performance figures: "The all-electric Macan will be the sportiest model in its segment."
Another new Macan with a combustion engine
The market launch of the all-electric Macan – the first Porsche to be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) – is planned for 2023. Porsche is positioning itself flexibly for the transition to pure electromobility. "In Europe, demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, but the pace of change varies considerably across the world. That's why we're going to launch another conventionally powered successor to the current Macan in the course of 2021," says Michael Steiner. The new combustion-engined Macan models will be offered alongside the all-electric Macan in the future. Until then, however, it still has millions of test kilometres to cover – both in real life and virtually.

Porsche Schweiz AG is donating the entire proceeds of a converted amount of CHF 185,000 to the Swiss non-profit organization Suisseculture Sociale. Porsche and its project partners are thereby supporting Swiss creative artists, whose sector has been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the project partners – including artist Richard Phillips, RM Sotheby's, and the Weiss Falk gallery in Basel – waived a fee or commission in order to benefit this cause. Porsche Schweiz AG donated the Porsche Taycan 4S entirely to the auction along with further auxiliaries of the lot. The Taycan Artcar is on display at Porsche Center Zug until it will be handed over to the successful Swiss bidder.
One-of-a-kind Porsche Taycan Artcar
The mobile work of art featuring Porsche's first all-electric sports car was created in Zurich and sold at a worldwide online auction from April 6 to 13. Richard Phillips, an internationally acclaimed American artist, crafted the design for the one-of-a-kind Porsche Taycan Artcar with the help of application specialists from SIGNal Design. The lot also included an exclusive individual tour of Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the birthplace of the Porsche Taycan, with Porsche AG's head of the Taycan model line. The Artcar itself was furnished with additional features by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur: "Queen of the Night" is inscribed on its door sill panels, and projectors illuminate the underfloor with Phillips's signature when the doors are opened.
"In addition to the donation itself, I am delighted with how this auction has attracted international interest in the important work of Suisseculture Sociale," said Michael Glinski, CEO of Porsche Schweiz AG. "The proceeds will benefit people in Switzerland who are currently in great need of assistance. I would like to thank everyone who submitted a bid, and congratulate above all the highest bidder."
Support for creative artists
In the words of Nicole Pfister Fetz, President of Suisseculture Sociale, "The COVID-19 crisis is still with us and culture remains one of the areas most affected. It will probably be a long time before cultural creatives can return to anything like normal conditions. Assistance from the private sector is therefore of great significance. I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Porsche for its generous support."
The Suisseculture Sociale organization supports all professional and full-time artists in every artistic field who live in Switzerland or hold Swiss citizenship. Suisseculture Sociale was founded twenty years ago to support creative artists and is independent of public funding. During the pandemic it was tasked by the Swiss Confederation with distributing emergency government aid to the cultural sector. Proceeds from the auction of the Taycan Artcar are intended for hardship cases that have not been covered by these measures.
Porsche auctions Taycan Artcar by Richard Phillips for charity
Acclaimed American artist Richard Phillips and Porsche have collaborated to create an exceptional work of art of Porsche's first all-electric sports car, the Taycan.
"At RM Sotheby's, we were thrilled to support Porsche Schweiz AG in the sale of the Porsche Taycan Artcar. The backing of Suisseculture Sociale is a truly worthwhile endeavor to support the many Swiss artists affected by the pandemic," said Chief Operating Officer Alain Squindo.
The work of art
The Taycan Artcar represents the second collaborative effort by New York-based artist Richard Phillips and the German sports-car maker. Phillips also designed a Porsche Artcar back in 2019 – together with Jörg Bergmeister, then a Porsche factory driver. The Porsche 911 RSR from Project 1 Motorsport became the first Artcar ever to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which may well be the world's toughest endurance race.
For the Taycan Artcar, Phillips transferred his large-scale painting entitled Queen of the Night to the body of the Porsche Taycan 4S. Inspired in 2010 by the work of legendary Swiss landscape artist Adolf Dietrich, it measures approximately eight square meters. Its incarnation on wheels is a three-dimensional arrangement of the original elements and details. "The full resplendent color of Queen of the Night culminates on the rear part of the car where the flower's blossoms completely envelope the bumper and are dramatically illuminated by the Taycan's signature horizonal light bar," says Phillips. "The initial idea shaping my Queen of the Night was the Taycan as an instantly recognizable icon of electric mobility and speed."
Porsche Taycan
The Porsche Taycan was launched in 2019 as the brand's first all-electric sports car. The Taycan 4S comes with two battery sizes, of which the Performance Battery Plus generates up to 420 kW (571 hp). Last year, the four-door sports sedan with twenty-seven technological novelties was voted the most innovative car on the global automotive market. The Taycan came in first in the World Performance Car and World Luxury Car categories at the 2020 World Car Awards.
